  1. S-112(1) First copy Printed on parchment. Binding: Eighteenth-century English gold-tooled red morocco, in ‘Harleian' style; bound for Lord Harley by Thomas Elliott. On both covers, gilt fillets form a border within which are a repeated floral and foliate roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 14, roll 3) and an ornamental roll (Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 14, roll 5). The centre-piece is made up of various tools, including Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 15, nos 2, 19, and 20; the spine is decorated with various tools, including Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 15, nos 6 and 16, also a star tool and an ornamental corner-piece tool (not illustrated in Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings'). Size: 211 × 155 × 57 mm. Size of leaf: 200 × 140 mm. On a3v the biography of the author by Trithemius is integrated with more information, that he was buried in S. Peter ‘Junioris' and that he died ‘xii die septembris et erat dominica mane circa et parum ante nonam', in the same hand that wrote the ownership note on a1r (see below). Paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue. Provenance: On a front parchment endleaf are painted two suspended shields bearing the arms of Peter Schott the Elder (1427-1504) and his wife, Susanna von Cöllen (†1498); inscribed beneath: ‘Petrus Schott' and ‘Susanna de Köll uxor eius obijt anno 1498 xviii die februarij et erat dominica in sexagesima Requiescat in pace'. Probably Strasbourg, Cathedral library, 1499: inscription on a1r in a humanist hand in brown ink: ‘Petrus Schott Senior, quondam Magister Scabinorum ciuitatis Argentinensis, genitor auctoris huius libelli; dedit [name cut away] hunc codicem in bibliothecam illic reponendum. 1499' [Peter Schott the Elder, who was for 22 years surveyor of the cathedral's buildings, is listed as one of the chief contributors of books to the cathedral library; see Schott, Works, ed. Cowie II 757]. Johannes Georgius Scherzius (seventeenth century?); inscription, ‘Joh. Georgii Scherzii' on a1r in a seventeenth-century(?) hand in brown ink. Edward, Lord Harley, later 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741); bought by Thomas Osborne; upper corner of the front endleaf not off, as in other Harleian books; ‘formerly in the Harleian collection . . . bequeathed . . . by Dr. Rawlinson' (Cotton 342). Bookseller's circular paper labels at the head of the spine, one numbered ‘382' over an earlier one. Size: 209 × 156 × 31 mm. Size of leaf: 204 × 141 mm. Early marginal notes, including comments on the text and ‘nota' marks, also underlining in the text. Copious early notes on a1v. Loose leaf of modern paper, containing a list, in Lawn's hand, of dedicatees of Schottus' letters and poems. Provenance: Georgius Humel (fifteenth/sixteenth century); inscriptions on title-page: ‘Pro iorro humel octo l' . . . grossis'; ‘Jorius abbati . . . librum . . .' Aulendorf, Baden-Württemberg, parish church of S. Martinus; inscription on a1r: 'E libris S. Martini in Aulendorff'. Ochsenhusan [ ]; stamp on a2r: ‘Sig. Byblyoth.
