As dated by Paul Needham in The Estelle Doheny Collection, I lot 16 (Christie's: 22 Oct. 1987), and Needham, Schøyen, lot 6; the former dating to [not after 1470] was first questioned by Scholderer, Fifty Essays, 153-4; see also Needham, ‘The Text', 55, where he notes that this edition was copied from Mentelin's edition of [not after 1461] (Bod-inc. B‑238).

  1. B-244(1) Copy Bound in two volumes (Gn–Ps and Prv–Apc), originally bound together. Binding: Eighteenth-century French gold-tooled red calf; by Nicolas-Denis Derome (le jeune), with the binder's ticket dated 1785, in use 1785-9; endleaves watermarked 1782; see Barber, ‘Baroque to Neoclassicism', no. 34: ‘Seven panel spine, corner decoration, flower centres with dotted lozenge'; marbled pastedowns; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Size: 416 × 280 × 53 and 416 × 285 × 50 mm. Size of leaf: 400 × 264 mm. Occasional marginal notes, some of them early. Marginal notes in vol. 2 washed out. Manuscript signatures. On [a2r] a ten-line initial is supplied in gold, with pen-flourishing in red and beige extending into the inner margin. Red headings, paragraph marks, and underlining. A later, probably nineteenth-century hand supplied initials in gold on red or blue and added ‘Finis' in gold, surrounded by a floral ornament in blue and gold, on [X10r]. Provenance: Cardinal Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne(?) (1727-1794): possibly the copy described by Laire, Index, 1 (1791), 100, 101. Not in Notitia (1795). Date of acquisition unknown; the shelfmark suggests a date before 1821; certainly in the Library by 1843: see Catalogus (1843), I 254. SHELFMARK: Auct. M 1.12,13.
