On both covers triple fillets form two frames; in the outer triangular-shaped halves of a large floral ornament; in the inner a repeated stamp of a dragon and scrolls containing the inscription: ‘SPES MEA DEUS'. The inner rectangle is divided by triple fillets into lozenge-shaped and triangular compartments, in which is a full or half floral ornament stamp. Signature of Johannes Hinselmann(?) on outside of cover of vol. 2. Size: Volume 2: 320 × 227 × 81 mm; vol. 4: 320 × 228 × 85 mm. Size of leaf: 308 × 204 mm. Early marginal notes. On a2r an eight-line initial ‘Q' is supplied in blue with red pen-work floral infill and extensions into the guttering. Other initials are supplied in red or blue. Capital strokes in red.   2. B-322(2) Second copy Vol. 4 only. Wanting gathering [*]. Binding: Sixteenth-century German blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with metal clasps. On both covers triple fillets form concentric frames; in the outer, a repeated round flower-head tool; in the central frame, a repeated floral tool and, in a panel at head and tail, a floral ornament; in the inner frame, a cresting roll. In the inner rectangle, a floral centre-piece and, at each corner, a small floral tool. Size: 324 × 223 × 80 mm. Size of leaf: 302 × 208 mm. Copious marginal notes. Table of contents on a1r in a contemporary hand. On a2r a nine-line initial ‘Q' is supplied in interlocked red and blue, with extension into the guttering. Other initials, some with extensions into the margins, paragraph marks, and a rubric on a2r are supplied in red. Capital strokes and underlining in red.   4. B-322(4) Fourth copy Vol. 1 only. Wanting A5-6. Binding: Contemporary German blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards; two clasps and catches. On both covers intersecting triple fillets form frames. In the outer is a repeated palmette; in the inner are several tools, some too worn for identification, but including a circular rosette(?) stamp, a circular eagle(?) stamp, and a fleuron. Triple fillets form the inner rectangle which is decorated on the upper cover with (worn) circular stamps between curved-outline tools making up merrythoughts; on the lower cover the rectangle is divided by triple fillets into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments decorated with a fleuron, and with a small floral stamp at the intersection of the fillets, and a circular stamp in the centre. The spine is decorated with the palmette, a fleuron, and a circular stamp, with ‘Lyranus’ at the head of the spine in early black ink. Size: 330 × 234 × 105 mm. Size of leaf: 310 × 224 mm. On P2v 'Spes mea Christus Anno 1606', in the hand which wrote the second ownership inscription. Provenance: Thomas Scheen, Wittlich, Rhine-Palatinate (fl. 1585–1590), pastor in ‘Rattigh’, presumably modern Rachtig (Zeltingen-Rachtig, to east of Wittlich, across Mosel), priest of the Teutonic Knights; inscriptions: on the front pastedown: ‘Modo agnosco Thomam Scheen Wittlichium’; on (HH6v: ‘Thomas Scheen, Wittlich pastor in Rattigh ordinis Theutonici presbyter.
