  1. B-493(1) First copy Wanting the blank leaves m4, Ee8, and oo10. Binding: Sixteenth-century English (Cambridge?) calf over wooden boards, two clasps lost; staple-marks at the foot of the upper cover; rebacked. On both covers fillets form four concentric frames; the inner rectangle is divided by horizontal fillets into three compartments. In the central compartments, a fleuron and the lettering I[ohn] B[etts], see Oldham, Blind-stamped Bindings, 49 n. 3. In the frames, two rolls: the first lettered Justitia, Prudentia, Suavitas, and Lucretia, the second Lucretia, Prudentia, and Suavitas; see Oldham pl. lxi, rolls no. 1079 and 1080. Size: 428 × 300 × 98 mm. Size of leaf: 415 × 277 mm. Former pastedowns now removed. A few early marginal notes. Provenance: John Betts (†1598); evidence from binding (see above). Binding: Seventeenth-century English blind-tooled mottled calf, formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at head of the upper cover; rebacked. Size: 437 × 300 × 75 mm. Size of leaf: 425 × 278 mm.
