Binding: Sixteenth-century English gold-tooled brown calf, bound shortly before 25 June 1600, for the Bodleian Library; calf; two clasps lost. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at head of the upper cover. On both covers a border of five fillets, the centre one in gold, stamped with the crest of the 2nd Lord Hunsdon. Size: 200 × 145 × 53 mm. Size of leaf: 190 × 137 mm. Manuscript strips used as reinforcing pieces. Early marginal notes. Provenance: Richard Saunders (sixteenth century); on 316v of item 2, several inscriptions of ‘Richardus Saunders me possidet teste Thoma Sanpole a quo . . . emi', the name later crossed out and replaced with ‘Joannes . . .’ Presented by George Carey, 2nd Lord Hunsdon (1547-1603) in 1600; see Benefactors' Register, I 10 and James, Catalogus (1605), 289; Jensen, ‘Benefactors' Register', no. 27.
