Wanting the blank leaf a1.
Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled calf; on both covers a floral roll forms a border; a foliate roll forms a frame; in each corner is a large crown (31 mm); in the centre a stamp of Minerva with spear and shield (66 mm).
Size: 300 × 205 × 35 mm.
Size of leaf: 288 × 190 mm.
A few early marginal notes, mainly supplying omitted passages.
Major epigraphic initials are supplied in interlocked dark red and violet or blue, with some highlighting in yellow, within frames of light blue or red floral ornaments. On a2r a painted coat of arms: two mermen holding a shield quartered azure(?) and or, the centre mutilated. See Pächt and Alexander II, 111 no. pr. 93.
Provenance: Pietro-Antonio Bolongaro-Crevenna (1735-1792); sale (1789), lot 6176; according to annotated sale catalogue bought in by van den Berg for Fl. 16.10, the equivalent of c.£1. 7. 10 according to the exchange rate used by Thomas Payne at the sale.
