Binding: Eighteenth-century English red morocco (c.1790), bound by Walther for the Bodleian Library; ticket on recto of front endleaf; gilt-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; the gold stamp of the Library on both covers. The previous binding is described by Morelli as Dutch. Size: 277 × 177 × 38 mm. Size of leaf: 267 × 162 mm. Principal initials are supplied in gold on a blue, red, and green ground, with reserved white vine-stem decoration; foliate extensions with some gold dotting in the outer margin; Italian, perhaps from Rome: see Pächt and Alexander II, 108 no. pr. 33. Other epigraphic initials are supplied in blue. Provenance: Maffeo Pinelli (1735-1785); see Morelli (1787), II 4496; sale (1789), lot 9397. English diced red morocco, with gold-tooled fillets and spine; gilt-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns. Size: 242 × 166 × 20 mm. Size of leaf: 232 × 150 mm. Occasional marginal annotations and ‘nota' marks. On [2A1r] a six-line epigraphic initial ‘D' is supplied in pink on a ground of blue, red, and green and with reserved white vine-stem decoration. Other epigraphic initials are supplied in red or blue. Provenance: Acquired between 1835 and 1847; see Catalogus (1843), Appendix, 884. SHELFMARK: Auct. Q 5.6.
