Copy
Wanting the blank leaves [*1], [a6], aa1, L11, and L12. Leaf F1 mounted, and supplied from another copy.
Line 54 on2 oo6v reads ‘ . . . per sua instituta misericordia . . . | FINISCE LA SECONDA CANTI | CA'; line 48 on aaa1r reads ‘ . . . finalmen | te'.
Title-leaf cropped, doubtless to remove earlier provenance.
Engravings: Hind B, ills 1 and 2, and a second impression of 2; engravings appear before cantos 1-3 of the 'Inferno' only, that before canto 1 being slightly cropped; the engraving before canto 3 is a repetition of the one belonging to canto 2, printed upside down (unique example of this) and obliquely.
Possibly a 'perfected' copy.
Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled calf; marbled pastedowns, stamped on both covers with the arms of Doge Marco Foscarini (for whom see below): quarterly, 1 and 4, three fleur-de-lis, 2 and 3, seven lozenges in bend; on chief, lion of St Mark; other examples of books with his arms on the binding include Washington DC, Folger Shakespeare Library, PA6278 A3 1575 cage [https://luna.folger.edu/luna/servlet/detail/BINDINGS~1~1~16172~104564:Open-covers,-PA6278-A3-1575-cage-?sort=MPSORTORDER1%2CCall_Number%2CCD_Title%2CImprint&qvq=w4s:/who%2FCoat%2Bof%2Barms%2Bof%2BMarco%2BFoscarini%2B%2525281696-1763%252529%25252C%2B117th%2BDoge%2Bof%2BVenice.%2Fwhat%2F1761%2Bcentury%2BItalian%2Barmorial%2Bbinding%2Bwith%2Bthe%2Bcoat%2Bof%2Barms%2Bof%2BMarco%2BFoscarini%2B%2525281696-1763%252529%25252C%2B117th%2BDoge%2Bof%2BVenice.%2Fwhen%2F18th%2Bcentury%2B%252528mid%252529;sort:MPSORTORDER1%2CCall_Number%2CCD_Title%2CImprint&mi=1&trs=2]; and Venice, Marciana Library, BM Aldine 804 [https://marciana.venezia.sbn.it/immagini-possessori/127-foscarini-marco].
