  1. D-077(1) First copy Wanting the blank leaf [z6]. On [a4r] line 4 reads ‘Tabula per ordinem litterarum alphabeti.'; an alphabetical index follows. Binding: Eighteenth-century calf; the spine gold-tooled; marbled pastedowns; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Size: 291 × 198 × 38 mm. Size of leaf: 284 × 185 mm. Early marginal notes in humanist hands. On [a5r] an eight-line initial is supplied in gold surrounded by white vine-stems defined in blue, red, and green; three-quarter border is supplied in gold surrounded by white vine-stems defined in blue in a wreath in the lower margin, a coat of arms: or, on a chevron azure three stars of the first, between three twigs of vine proper, over an erased coat which had a fess lozengy. At the beginning of each book, principal initials are supplied in gold on a blue, red, or green ground with white dotting; other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue. See Pächt and Alexander II, 110 no. pr. 77. Provenance: Bartolomeo Tassi (sixteenth century?). Paul Girardot de Préfond (†after c.1800)(?); ‘n° 60 6077 B. J. D. B.' inside front endleaf; inside upper cover a white label with manuscript no. in black ink: ‘2459'. Binding: Nineteenth-century English diced russia, probably by C. Lewis, as suggested by a cutting from a bookseller's catalogue. Size: 292 × 203 × 37 mm. Size of leaf: 282 × 184 mm. Provenance: On [p5v] an inscription: ‘A di S. Ma[rc]° Castello 1536'. Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823); sale (1824), lot 1061 or 1062; note: ‘From Sykes sale £9-0-0' on front pastedown; the price matches the first copy; the binding was described as red morocco. Purchased by Ingram Bywater (1840-1914) from an English bookseller for £4. 14. 6; see cutting pasted to front endleaf; Elenchus, no. 1077. Bequeathed in 1914. SHELFMARK: Byw. D 2.12.
