F-042(1) First copy Binding: Eighteenth-century English (London, 1790s?, probably Christian Kalthoeber or Heinrich Walther); red morocco, gold fillets, gold-tooled spine and turn-ins, and gilt-edged leaves, stamped with the arms of the 2nd Earl Spencer and his motto; marbled pastedowns; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Size: 330 × 228 × 39 mm. Size of leaf: 318 × 207 mm. Letter numbers are supplied in manuscript. The shield in the woodcut border on AA1v contains a spread of flowers and the initials ‘MIM' in black ink; the shield in the woodcut border on AA6v contains two hooks in saltire between three roses, in base ‘SO'; similar to two arms in Siebmacher V/5 pl. 19: ‘Frickh' and ‘Fricko'. Some three-line initials are supplied in red; paragraph marks are supplied in red or, infrequently, blue; underlining and capital strokes in red. Provenance: Book-plate removed from pastedown. Early marginal notes, summarizing the text and in a few cases expanding it, mainly relating it to moral philosophy. Shields in both woodcut borders contain ten roundels. Provenance: Antonio Francesco Gori (1691-1757); faint inscription on AA1r: ‘Antonii Francisci Gori librorum'. On [con10r], ‘Pretium operis £20'. Early marginal notes, some in red ink, highlighting key passages, adding classical references, and structuring the text; pointing hands and underlining in the text. Woodcut borders on AA1v, AA6v, and a1r are coloured in red, blue, green, and yellow. Provenance: Franz Carl Grieshaber (1798-1866); inscription on AA1r: ‘Fr. Car. Grieshaber, Gymn. Frib. Prof. 1823'.
