Bound with:
1. Gregorius I, Pont. Max., Pastorale, sive Regula pastoralis. Venice: Hieronymus de Paganinis, 13 Dec. 1492 (G‑227);
3. Gregorius I, Pont. Max., Homiliae super Evangeliis. Venice: Peregrinus de Pasqualibus, 14 Mar. 1493 (G‑212).
Binding: Contemporary German (Benediktbeuren, Kyriß workshop no. 7) blind-tooled sheep dyed red over wooden boards; one central boss and four corner-pieces lost from each cover; catch and clasp. On the upper cover triple fillets form a frame, within which is a repeated flower-petal stamp. Triple fillets form the inner rectangle which is divided by further triple fillets into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments with a circular lion stamp, a scroll stamp (Kyriß pl. 13, group 1, no. 3), and a small rosette stamp; at the intersection of each set of fillets is a small flower-petal stamp. On the lower cover triple fillets form the inner rectangle which is divided by further triple fillets into triangular and lozenge-shaped compartments with a large flower-petal stamp, and a stylized palm-leaf stamp (Kyriß pl. 13, group 1, no. 6); at the intersection of each set of fillets is the small flower-petal stamp. Contemporary parchment manuscript label on the upper cover, giving author and titles of works; later (seventeenth-century(?)) paper manuscript label on spine. The upper cover almost detached.
Size: 218 × 159 × 55 mm.
Size of leaf: 207 × 155 mm.
Two parchment pastedowns from a twelfth-century sacramentary, from the ‘Proprium de tempore'.
Two-line, six-line, and seven-line initials, some with extensions into the margins, and paragraph marks are supplied in red; underlining in red.
Provenance: Benediktbeuren, Bavaria, Benedictine abbey, SS. Benedictus et Jacobus; inscription on A1r of item 1: ‘Benedictenpewrn 1494'.
Duplicate from the Royal Library, Munich; ‘Dpl' and ‘2768' in pencil on A1r of item 1, ‘Dpl' on [*1r] of item 3.
Perhaps the copy purchased in 1832 for £0. 2. 6; see Books Purchased (1832), 10, although that copy was apparently imported from Florence by D. A. Talboys, Oxford; see Library Bills (1829-32), no. 446; the shelfmark and the Munich provenance make a date of acquisition of 1850 more likely.
SHELFMARK: Auct. 5Q 6.23(2).
