In this copy gathering [D] is at the beginning. Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled red morocco; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers; gilt-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; turquoise silk bookmark. Size: 272 × 196 × 56 mm. Size of leaf: 266 × 178 mm. Marginal notes, including on [q4v] a sermon(?) in Italian with incipit ‘Ora si, o fratelli, che vi e bisogno di nouo cantico poi che troppo auoua(?) e troppo maggiore di tutte l'altre . . .'; also biblical quotations in Latin in an eighteenth-century hand on [r5v] [Iob 7,16 ‘Parce mihi . . .'], and on [r6r] [Is 45,8]; other cropped notes in Italian. On [a2r] a ten-line initial ‘S' is supplied in yellow and brown edged in grey, over a circle decorated with wavy patterns in pink, red, and grey, all on a ground of mottled green and yellow, within a border of blue, white, and grey, which has a foliate extension into the inner margin in green and red; also a five-line initial ‘C' is supplied in red edged in gold, on a ground coloured to look like marble, surrounded by a red border. Partial manuscript foliation in black ink: 1-128. Provenance: ‘Suor Maria inlumina Loredan'; inscription on [D1v] in a sixteenth-century Italian hand. Pietro-Antonio Bolongaro-Crevenna (1735-1792); printed label of the sale (1789), part IV, lot 5957, bought in by P. den Hengst for Fl. 5, the equivalent of £0. 8. 9 according to the exchange rate used by Thomas Payne at this sale.
