Wanting the blank leaves [a1] and [r12].
Binding: Eighteenth-century gold-tooled red morocco, with gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt-edged leaves, marbled pastedowns, and green silk bookmark. Triple fillets form a frame, with a floral stamp at each intersection. Pomegranate stamps on the spine.
Size: 270 × 190 × 28 mm.
Size of leaf: 264 × 174 mm.
Early ‘nota' mark on [l3r].
Between gatherings [a] and [b] is inserted a parchment illuminated leaf (mid-fourteenth-century France(?)), depicting scenes from the life of St Paul; see Pächt and Alexander I 47, no. 604, where other leaves by the same hand are recorded [also notes (unsigned) by A. C. de la Mare and M. R. Kauffmann in the Bodleian's annotated copy of Pächt and Alexander I, kept in Duke Humfrey's Library]. Initials, some with reserved white or pen-work decoration, are supplied in red; capital strokes and a few line fillers in red.
Provenance: Possibly Louis César de la Baume le Blanc, duc de La Vallière (1708-1780); sale (1783), lot 494, but the sale catalogue does not mention the illuminations.
