1. A1r [Epitaph of Lucan.] ‘Epitauium Lucani.’ Incipit: ‘Corduba me genuit, rapuit Nero, prelia dixi | Que gessere pares hinc socer, inde gener'; 2 elegiac distichs. See L‑150.
2. A2r Eolicus de Windesheim, Petrus: ‘In M. Annei Lucani Pharsaliam prefatio.’ Incipit: ‘M. Anneus Lucanus vir Beticus, poeta maximus, quem Papinius nedum Senece . . .’

1. L-158(1) Copy Binding: Contemporary German (Leipzig, Kyriß workshop no. 105) blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with two metal clasps and catches. On both covers intersecting triple fillets form concentric frames; within the inner frame is a repeated floral and foliate stamp (Kyriß pl. 213, no. 7). Further triple fillets form an inner rectangle with merrythoughts made up from headed-outline tools, each containing a fleuron (Kyriß pl. 213, no. 6). The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library is on both covers. Size: 231 × 157 × 57 mm. Size of leaf: 215 × 148 mm. Copious early marginal and interlinear notes, in both red and black ink, the red hand mainly extracting key words; the black hand consisting mainly of lecture notes, also including ‘nota' marks and underlining in the text; the notes at the beginning of gathering A seem to have been washed, but in the rest of the book they are mostly in one hand, that of a Leipzig student, who owned the book in 1499; on Nn7r is an inscription by him: ‘In die Mercurii post festum sancti Egidii in quem magister Johannes Cubitensis summo studio in calcem vsque deduxit 1499'; for Johannes de Cubito see Die Matrikel der Universität Leipzig . . . II. Die Promotionen von 1409-1559, ed. Georg Erler, 370, and passim. On A1v is a life of Lucanus, with incipit, ‘Marcus Anneus Lucanus patrem habuit Marcus Anneus Mela . . .', written in a sixteenth-century hand, and apparently a variation of the ‘Vita' by Vacca. On Nn8v a note in a sixteenth-century hand on Nebuchadnezzar and the Temple in Jerusalem. Also bibliographical notes by Kloß. One- to three-line initials, some with extensions into the margins, and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue; headlines supplied in red; the text is enclosed within a single red rule in gatherings A–G; capital strokes and underlining in red. Provenance: An unnamed Leipzig undergraduate, who owned the book in 1499 and followed the lectures of Johannes de Cubito; see above.
