Binding: Eighteenth-century English gold-tooled red morocco; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers and on both marbled pastedowns. Almost certainly bound for Harley by Christopher Chapman; for stamps and rolls see Nixon, ‘Harleian Bindings', pl. 13 (the made-up centrepiece, with very slight variations), also pl. 14, Chapman rolls 3 and 5. The binding is also ascribed to Harley in the Spencer sale catalogue. Size: 310 × 210 × 60 mm. Size of leaf: 300 × 187 mm. Marginal notes, mainly extracting key words, in two different humanist hands; the notes in the Varro section are fifteenth-century and earlier than those in the Nonius section. Provenance: Edward, Lord Harley, later 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741); bought by Thomas Osborne; Sheppard suggests that this may be the copy described in Catalogus Bibliothecae Harleianae, II no. 15481; evidence of binding; upper corner of the front endleaf cut off. 2. N-123(2) Second copy Nonius Marcellus only. Leaf a2 signed a_i. Binding: Seventeenth/eighteenth-century parchment; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Title gold-tooled on a square green leather label at the head of the spine. Rebacked with parchment. Size: 287 × 197 × 34 mm. Size of leaf: 280 × 185 mm. Copiously annotated, in Latin and Greek, in a number of eighteenth-century hands, mainly extracting key words and correcting the text; references to the sixteenth-century edition of Nonius by Denis Godefroy (1549-1622); several notes are signed ‘L. T.' ‘0. 7: 6' in brown ink on front endleaf. Provenance: ‘Hum[frey] Bat.' on a1r in a sixteenth/seventeenth-century hand. Former shelfmark ‘C 19' or ‘O 19' written across the fore-edge. LT (eighteenth century); notes (see above). Richard Rawlinson (1690-1755); engraved book-plate inside the lower cover: ‘Sigillum Univ. Oxon.
