    1. Publius Ovidius Naso, Heroides. Lyons: Johannes Thomas, for Stephanus Gueynard, 25 Oct. 1513. The last leaf blank does not bear the device, as presumed by BMC, which is here on a1r. Binding: Sixteenth-century French (probably Lyons) blind-tooled calf, with two ties lost. On both covers fillets form a border. Triple fillets form a frame within which is a repeated lattice-work and flower-petal stamp. Triple fillets form the inner rectangle which is divided by further triple fillets into four compartments, two decorated with a lattice-work and fleur-de-lis roll, and two with an ornamental roll of flower petals and wheatsheaves. Head and tail of the spine repaired. Size: 266 × 179 × 43 mm. Size of leaf: 255 × 166 mm. Some underlining in the text, also occasional ‘nota' marks, and pointing hands. Annotations in French, scribbles and pen-trials on k3r-v by Bascle (see below); in the lower margin of d3v a proverb(?) in the same hand: ‘Omnia si perdas famam seruare memento | Qua semel amissa postea nullus eris'. On k3r a draft note in French in the same hand; also the name ‘Peyroti', presumably for Nicolaus Perottus. Provenance: François Bascle (sixteenth century); name in the lower margin of d4r, and repeated several times on k3r-v; both names are apparently in the same hand. Pierre Berès (b. 1913). Purchased in 1951 from Berès; note on the front pastedown; Bodleian stamp dated 21 July 1951 on A2v. SHELFMARK: Inc. d. F2.1495.1(2).
