1. R-017(1) First copy The outer half of hh8 torn away. Binding: Eighteenth/nineteenth-century quarter sheep over red pasteboards; yellow-edged leaves. Size: 265 × 210 × 60 mm. Size of leaf: 256 × 194 mm. On A2r ‘Bardenay' in brown ink in an early hand, cancelled. On a1r the author's name in brown ink in a modern hand. Copious notes in a sixteenth-century English hand; a pointing hand with rings on r6r. On front pastedown bibliographical notes in Farmer's and Douce's hands, the latter in disagreement with the former. The first four leaves rubricated. Provenance: Richard Barney (fl. 1490); on the remaining portion of hh8v the note: ‘|| domino Richardo Barney in sacris scienciis | studencium priori Vniuersitatis Cantab^e Anno domini 1490'. 2. R-017(2) Second copy Wanting the blank leaf A1 and also gg4. Binding: Contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards; rebacked. Two clasps and catches lost. Formerly chained: staple-marks of a hasp at head of upper cover. The gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on both covers. Triple fillets form a double frame. Within the outer frame a very small lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lis and some very small trefoils. Diagonal triple fillets divide the inner rectangle into lozenge-shaped and triangular compartments, each decorated with either a small six-petalled flower, a bigger six-petalled flower, a circular six-petalled flower, or a lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lis; see Foot, ‘Monasteries and Dragons', 196. ‘4' in black ink across the head of the fore-edge. Size: 285 × 215 × 60 mm. Size of leaf: 285 × 200 mm. Pastedowns consist of parchment leaves from a twelfth-century noted breviary and a fourteenth-century noted psalter. Contemporary manuscript title on front endleaf. Author's name and title in the upper margin of A2r in a sixteenth/seventeenth-century hand. On A2r, a1r, b8v, c8v, e1v, p6v, r5v, r8v, s4v, x7r, and hh1v principal initials are supplied in red with brown pen-work decoration extending into the margin (Dutch style). Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red; capital strokes in red. Most of the initials supplied in red have been numbered in contemporary arabic numerals.
