S-013(1) Copy Binding: Eighteenth-century half red morocco; green paper boards; the title in gilt on a green leather label on the spine; the gold stamp of the Bodleian Library on brown leather labels on both covers. Size: 283 × 202 × 202 mm. Size of leaf: 273 × 195 mm. A few marginal notes in a late fifteenth-century Italian hand, supplying pointing hands, paragraph marks, brackets, scribbles, nota marks, and repeating sections of the text. On the rear endleaf a note in the same hand: ‘Probus Emil. de uita Nepotiani | Est enim hoc comune uitium in magnis liberisque ciuitatibus ut inuidia glorie comes sit; et libenter de iis detrahunt quos emergere uideant altius'. On [a2r] Italian three-quarter white vine-stem woodcut borders stamped after printing, with the background painted in blue, red, and green, outlined in red and green; the text area outlined in gold. In the lower border two putti flank a coat of arms (containing a leg and a wing(?) drawn in pen). Such borders were used in 1470-4; see M. M. Smith, The Title-page (London, 2000), 129-30, and pl. 8.3; Lilian Armstrong in The Painted Page: Italian Renaissance Book Illuminations. 1450-1555, ed. J. J. G. Alexander (Munich, 1994), 170 no. 83. An Italian illuminated initial: a gilt ‘O' on a blue square with clusters of three silver dots; within the body of the initial a white vine-stem curl, on either side painted in red and green, with clusters of three silver dots. On [d1r] a woodcut initial ‘F' painted in silver, on a wavy square painted in blue, with a vine-stem pattern (painted in red and green); the whole decoration is covered with clusters of three silver dots. Elsewhere initials are supplied in red or blue ink. Provenance: Giacomo Lucchesini (1753-1820); ‘Di Giacomo Lucchesini', erased, on front pastedown.
