Walther; the gold stamp of the Library on both covers; gilt-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; green silk bookmark. Size: 281 × 202 × 20 mm. Size of leaf: 271 × 190 mm. A marginal note in a contemporary Italian hand, supplying a maxim by ‘Pius papa'. A few marginal and interlinear notes in a later Italian hand, supplying brackets, corrections to the text, synonyms, pointing hands, and brief comments on the text. On [a1r] a five-line initial ‘O' is supplied in red, on a pen-work square, partly coloured in blue; the pen-work decoration within the body of the letter is partly coloured in yellow. On [c3r] a six-line initial ‘F' is supplied in blue on a pen-work square, partly coloured in red; the pen-work decoration within the body of the letter is partly coloured in green or red. Elsewhere three-line initials are supplied in red, some with pen-work decoration extending into the margins. Provenance: Maffeo Pinelli (1735-1785)(?); presumably Morelli (1787), lot 2919 (‘exemplar nitidissimum'); sale (1789), lot 7820. Binding: Seventeenth-century calf; the spine gold-tooled; the author's name in gilt on a brown leather label on the spine; sprinkled red- and black-edged leaves. Size: 242 × 176 × 29 mm. Size of leaf: 235 × 165 mm. A few marginal and interlinear notes in a contemporary Italian hand, supplying brackets, pointing hands, synonyms, and glosses. Notes in the hand of Alexander Garnerius, supplying pointing hands, underlining, and comments in Italian and Latin. On [a1r] the initial ‘O' is supplied in red with reserved white decoration on a darker red square; the space within the body of the initial is roughly coloured in green and brown. Red pen-work decoration outlined in green and brown extends into the left margin, with two flowers coloured in black and red at the tip. On [c3r] the initial ‘F' is supplied in red with marginal extensions in a darker red. Elsewhere two- to three-line initials are supplied in red. Capitals on [a1r] are touched with yellow wash. Provenance: Alexander Garnerius (sixteenth century); see the initials ‘A. G.' on [a1r] and inscription on [a9v]. Manuscript shelfmark ‘H. 2. 8' on the recto of the front endleaf.
