S-019(1) Copy Binding: Eighteenth-century German(?) half tawed leather, over pasteboards, formerly covered with red marbled paper, now covered with a later (twentieth-century?) coloured paper; gilt title on a brown morocco label and ‘242' on a paper label at the head of the spine. Manuscript title along the fore-edge in black ink. Hole surrounded by rust marks in the lower edge of g4, showing that the book was formerly chained. Mark at the centre of the fore-edge, showing that this book formerly had one central clasp and catch. Size: 312 × 215 × 18 mm. Size of leaf: 305 × 209 mm. Occasional marginal and interlinear notes (some washed), in a contemporary Italian hand, supplying pointing hands, brackets, variant readings and corrections, and extracting key words. On a1v a six-line initial ‘O' is supplied in blue with reserved white decoration; red pen-work is supplied within and around the body of the initial. Elsewhere two- to six-line initials are supplied in blue or red. Provenance: Boninus Salvionus (fifteenth century); ‘Magistri Boninj Saluionj et amicorum' on a1r. Heinrich Rosenthal (1879-1960); note in pencil on the front pastedown: ‘Ink. E. J. No. 242', with ‘242' on a white paper label edged in blue at the head of the spine.
