Theobaldus Physiologus de naturis duodecim animalium.
Analysis of content:
  1. a1r [Title-page.]
  2. a2r [Introduction(?)]. Incipit: ‘[Q]uoniam secundum Platonem nihil est ortum sub sole cuius causa legitima non precessit . . .’ The anonymous commentator states that ‘ . . . causa efficiens scientie huius libri dicitur fuisse magister Theobaldus doctor et episcopus qui istum librum simplicibus uerbis composuit'.
  3. a2v Theobaldus: Physiologus de naturis duodecim animalium. ‘De leone'.’ PL CLXXI 1217-24; ed. P. T. Eden, Theobaldi “Physiologus”, Mittelateinische Studien und Texte, 6 (Leiden, 1972); see also F. McCulloch, Medieval Latin and French Bestiaries, Studies in the Romance Languages and Literatures, 33 (Chapel Hill, NC, 1960), 40-1; Henkel, Schultexte, 283-5; VL VII 620-34 at 627; Nikolaus Henkel, Studien zu ‘Physiologus' im Mittelalter, Hermaea, NS 38 (Tübingen, 1976), 36-41; see also G. Orlandi, ‘La tradizione del Physiologus e i prodromi nel bestiario latino', in L'uomo di fronte al mondo animale nell'alto Medioevo, 7-13 aprile 1983, 2 vols, Settimane di studio del Centro italiano di studi sull'alto Medioevo, 31 (Spoleto, 1985), II 1057-1106, at 1101-3. The authorship of this work is assigned to Hildebertus Cenomannensis (†1134) in PL; and often to Theobaldus, Abbot of Montecassino (1022-35); according to Eden (following Manitius) the author must have been a ‘magister' in northern or Central Italy in the eleventh or twelfth century.
  4. a2v [Commentary.] Incipit: ‘Iste liber cuius subiectum uisum diuiditur prima sui diuisione . . .’ The commentary alternates with the text; see Eden 4 and 81-2 for a list of manuscripts with the commentary.
