Binding: Eighteenth/nineteenth-century mottled sheep; the spine gold-tooled. Marbled blue-edged leaves; marbled pastedowns; green silk bookmark. Size: 294 × 210 × 48 mm. Size of leaf: 286 × 201 mm. Occasional marginal notes, mainly commenting on and complementing the text with additional information, ‘nota' marks in Latin and in Greek, and pointing hands in brown ink, in the same humanist hand as the ownership note below. Provenance: Italy, Franciscan convent (fifteenth century); partially read inscription in a contemporary humanist hand on H6v: ‘Hic liber pertinet loco ins[ ]l[ ]i b[ ] [ ] libraria quem [ ] [ ] emi p[ ] loci guardianus [ ]ofiris loci eiusdem 1492'. A variant. a2r, l. 15: ‘ . . . oīum uirginūm inutilis'; b4r, col. 1, l. 15: ‘recumbam'. Binding: Late sixteenth-century Italian (or possibly Spanish) limp parchment, with remains of replacement loop and bead fastening. Manuscript title along the spine. Blue-edged leaves. Size: 275 × 195 × 44 mm. Size of leaf: 274 × 189 mm. Early pagination, on the recto only, ‘1-476'. ‘Lo. J.' in brown ink in a seventeenth-century(?) hand in the middle of the upper margin of a2r. Occasional marginal notes, mainly extracting authors' names, adding ‘nota' marks, and some underlining in a sixteenth/seventeenth-century hand in brown ink. On a2r an Italian eight-line initial ‘U' is supplied in burgundy within a square gold ground edged in black. The area defined by the letter is decorated with a blue, red, and green flower; from the letter departs a floral and foliate extension into the inner, upper, and lower margins to form a border, decorated in various colours and gold dots. Other initials are supplied in interlocked red and blue or in red or blue, sometimes with reserved white decoration. Provenance: Purchased for £0. 11. 0; see Books Purchased (1852), 16.
